Adds a sectionInserted: SEC. 372. REPORT ON FORMER INDIAN BOARDING SCHOOLS OR INSTITUTIONS UNDER THE JURISDICTION OR CONTROL OF THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE.
Inserted: (a) In General.--Not later than one year after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Defense shall submit to the appropriate committees of Congress a report that provides--
Inserted: (1) an accounting of all schools or institutions described in subsection (b) that--
Inserted: (A) were located on land that was under the jurisdiction or control of the Department of Defense at the time of the operation of the school or institution; or
Inserted: (B) were located on land that is under the jurisdiction or control of the Department as of the date of the enactment of this Act; and
Inserted: (2) a description of the role of the Department of Defense in hosting and administering schools or institutions described in subsection (b) and the actions taken by the Department in connection with those schools or institutions, including--
Inserted: (A) complete accountings, engagements, and actions;
Inserted: (B) the identification of marked and unmarked burial grounds; and
Inserted: (C) the repatriation of remains of Native students who died while attending a school or institution described in subsection (b); and
Inserted: (3) the findings and recommendations of the Secretary with respect to the matters addressed under paragraphs (1) and (2).
Inserted: (b) Schools or Institutions Described.--The schools or institutions described in this subsection are schools or institutions that housed or administered Federal programs to assimilate American Indian, Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian children that--
Inserted: (1) provided on-site housing or overnight lodging;

Inserted: (2) were described in records as providing formal academic or vocational training and instruction;
Inserted: (3) were described in records as receiving Federal Government funds or other support; and
Inserted: (4) were operational before 1969.
Inserted: (c) Consultation and Engagement.--In carrying out this section, the Secretary of Defense shall consult with Indian Tribes and engage with Native Hawaiian organizations.
Inserted: (d) Briefing.--Not later than one year after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Defense shall brief the appropriate committees of Congress on the report required under subsection (a)
Inserted: (e) Appropriate Committees of Congress.--In this section, the term "appropriate committees of Congress" means--
Inserted: (1) The Committee on Armed Services and the Committee on Indian Affairs of the Senate; and
Inserted: (2) The Committee on Armed Services and the Subcommittee for Indigenous Peoples of the United States of the Committee on Natural Resources of the House of Representatives.

Ms. MURKOWSKI submitted an amendment intended to be proposed to amendment SA 5499 submitted by Mr. Reed (for himself and Mr. Inhofe) and intended to be proposed to the bill H.R. 7900, to authorize appropriations for fiscal year 2023 for military activities of the Department of Defense, for military construction, and for defense activities of the Department of Energy, to prescribe military personnel strengths for such fiscal year, and for other purposes; which was ordered to lie on the table; as follows:
At the end of subtitle E of title III, add the following:
SEC. 372. REPORT ON FORMER INDIAN BOARDING SCHOOLS OR INSTITUTIONS UNDER THE JURISDICTION OR CONTROL OF THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE.
(a) In General.--Not later than one year after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Defense shall submit to the appropriate committees of Congress a report that provides--
(1) an accounting of all schools or institutions described in subsection (b) that--
(A) were located on land that was under the jurisdiction or control of the Department of Defense at the time of the operation of the school or institution; or
(B) were located on land that is under the jurisdiction or control of the Department as of the date of the enactment of this Act; and
(2) a description of the role of the Department of Defense in hosting and administering schools or institutions described in subsection (b) and the actions taken by the Department in connection with those schools or institutions, including--
(A) complete accountings, engagements, and actions;
