SA 2340. Mr. SCHATZ submitted an amendment intended to be proposed by him to the bill S. 4638, to authorize appropriations for fiscal year 2025 for military activities of the Department of Defense, for military construction, and for defense activities of the Department of Energy, to prescribe military personnel strengths for such fiscal year, and for other purposes; which was ordered to lie on the table; as follows: At the end of subtitle D of title XII, add the following: SEC. 1266. REPORT ON THE IMPACT OF THE WAR IN GAZA ON THE STANDING OF THE UNITED STATES IN THE INDO- PACIFIC REGION. (a) In General.--Not later than 90 days after the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Defense, in coordination with the Secretary of State and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, shall submit a report to the relevant congressional committees regarding the impacts to United States security and diplomatic interests in the Indo-Pacific region as a result of the United States' actions and engagements with Israel during the ongoing Israel-Hamas War. (b) Contents.--The report required under subsection (a) shall include-- (1) an assessment of public sentiment towards the United States within nations in the Indo-Pacific region, with a special focus on the standing of the United States in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Pacific Island nations that are members of the Pacific Islands Forum; (2) a threat assessment with respect to United States' facilities, installations, and personnel in the Indo-Pacific region since October 7, 2023, including whether the current threat is uniquely more significant than prior threats; (3) a description of any impacts to the willingness of nations in the Indo-Pacific region to engage with the United States on issues of intelligence sharing, economic development, and the expansion of bilateral relations; and (4) an assessment on the rise of extremism in the Indo- Pacific region that is targeted against the United States or its allies. ______
