AI-Generated Summary

Updated April 14, 2026 at 2:01 AM UTC

The Lymphedema Treatment Act would change Medicare rules so that compression therapy supplies used to treat lymphedema are covered as durable medical equipment. By adding these items to the list of services Medicare pays for, the bill aims to reduce out‑of‑pocket costs for patients who need compression garments, bandaging systems, and related supplies. The change would apply to items provided on or after January 1, 2021 and affects Medicare beneficiaries who have a physician‑prescribed lymphedema treatment plan.

Key Provisions

  • Amends Section 1861 of the Social Security Act to insert “and includes lymphedema compression treatment items” into the definition of durable medical equipment.
  • Defines “lymphedema compression treatment items” as compression garments, devices, bandaging systems, components, and supplies that are customarily used for lymphedema, prescribed by a qualified health professional, and not otherwise covered under Medicare.
  • Specifies that the covered items include multilayer bandaging systems, custom or standard‑fit gradient compression garments, non‑elastic and low‑elastic garments, compression wraps, directional flow pads, and any other compression aids the Secretary deems effective.
  • Sets the effective date of coverage for these items to January 1, 2021.
