Cameras in the Courtroom Act

Introduced March 14, 2019

AI-Generated Summary

Updated April 14, 2026 at 3:05 AM UTC

The Cameras in the Courtroom Act would require the Supreme Court to allow television coverage of all its open sessions, unless a majority of the justices determine that broadcasting a particular case would violate the due‑process rights of one or more parties. The bill changes the U.S. Code to add this requirement, making Supreme Court proceedings more publicly accessible while preserving a safeguard for fairness in specific cases.

Key Provisions

  • Adds a new section to Title 28, U.S. Code, stating that the Supreme Court must permit TV coverage of all open sessions.
  • Provides an exception: the Court can refuse coverage in a case if a majority of justices find it would breach due‑process rights of any party.
