Mr. McKinley (for himself and Mrs. Axne) introduced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce

A BILL

To require the Director of the National Institutes of Health to conduct an evaluation of menopause-related research (including gaps in research and knowledge regarding the causes, symptoms, and treatments for menopause), to develop a strategic plan to resolve gaps in knowledge and research, and identify topics in need of further research relating to potential treatments for menopause-related symptoms, and for other purposes.

1.

Short title

This Act may be cited as the Menopause Research Act of 2022.

2.

Evaluation of menopause-related research

(a)

In general

The Director of the National Institutes of Health shall—

(1)

conduct an evaluation of—

(A)

the results of completed menopause-related research, and research on mid-life women’s health;

(B)

the status of ongoing menopause-related research, and research on mid-life women’s health; and

(C)

any gaps in knowledge and research on—

(i)

treatments for menopause-related symptoms; and

(ii)

the safety and effectiveness of treatments for menopause-related symptoms; and

(2)

as part of such evaluation, identify the total amount of funding allocated by the National Institutes of Health for the conduct or support of menopause-related research, and research on mid-life women’s health over the preceding 5 fiscal years.

(b)

Report; strategic plan

Not later than 180 days after the date of enactment of this Act, the Director of the National Institutes of Health shall submit to the Congress—

(1)

a report on the findings of such evaluation; and

(2)

a strategic plan—

(A)

to resolve the gaps in knowledge and research identified in the report; and

(B)

to identify topics in need of further research relating to potential treatments for menopause-related symptoms.

3.

Menopause-related research, and research on mid-life women’s health

(a)

In general

The Secretary of Health and Human Services, acting through the Director of the National Institutes of Health, shall conduct or support menopause-related research, and research on mid-life women’s health.

(b)

Authorization of appropriations

There is authorized to be appropriated to carry out this section $100,000,000 for each of fiscal years 2023 and 2024.
