Supporting Families of the Fallen Act

Introduced September 22, 2021

AI-Generated Summary

Updated February 8, 2026 at 6:49 AM UTC

The Supporting Families of the Fallen Act raises the automatic maximum life‑insurance coverage for both the Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) and Veterans' Group Life Insurance (VGLI) programs from $400,000 to $500,000. The change is intended to give families of service members and veterans greater financial protection. The new limit takes effect either 60 days after the law is enacted or when the Veterans Affairs Secretary confirms the increase is financially sound and will not cause a loss for the programs. This affects current and future SGLI and VGLI policyholders and their beneficiaries.

Key Provisions

  • Increases the automatic maximum coverage amount for SGLI and VGLI from $400,000 to $500,000.
  • Sets the effective date to the later of 60 days after enactment or when the VA Secretary determines the higher coverage is actuarially sound and will not cause program losses.
