The Prohibiting IRS Financial Surveillance Act aims to stop the Treasury Department from adding new reporting rules that would force banks to disclose customers' deposit and withdrawal activity. It bars any new requirements for financial institutions to report account balances, transactions, or transfers, unless such reporting was already mandated by law when the bill takes effect. The bill primarily impacts the Treasury Secretary, banks and other financial institutions, and the individuals who hold accounts with them.

Key Provisions

  • The Treasury Secretary (or any delegate) may not require any financial institution to report the inflows or outflows of any account they maintain.
  • The Secretary may not require reporting of any balances, transactions, transfers, or similar information about any account, except where such reporting is already required under existing laws as of the bill’s enactment date.
