Pay Our Military Act of 2023

A bill making continuing appropriations for military pay in the event of a Government shutdown.

Introduced September 18, 2023

AI-Generated Summary

Updated January 20, 2026 at 11:28 AM UTC

The Pay Our Military Act of 2023 makes sure that members of the armed forces, civilian Defense Department and Coast Guard staff, and Defense contractors keep getting paid if a government shutdown occurs in fiscal year 2024. It allows the Treasury to use any unspent money to cover those pay and allowance costs until regular funding is restored or a set date is reached. The bill applies to active service members, reserve components, eligible civilian personnel, and contractors supporting them.

Key Provisions

  • Appropriates any necessary Treasury funds to provide pay and allowances to active-duty military, reserve forces, and eligible civilian personnel of the Department of Defense and Coast Guard during a shutdown period for FY2024.
  • Allows similar funding for contractors who are determined by the Secretary of Defense or Secretary of Homeland Security to be supporting those service members.
  • Defines the "Secretary concerned" as the Secretary of Defense for Defense matters and the Secretary of Homeland Security for Coast Guard matters.
  • Specifies that the funding authority ends when a regular or continuing appropriation is enacted, another law provides the needed funds, or on January 1, 2025, whichever comes first.
