Introduced February 7, 2024

AI-Generated Summary

Updated January 20, 2026 at 2:37 PM UTC

The Removing Access Barriers to Running for Elected Office for People with Disabilities Act would let people with disabilities campaign for federal, state, or local office without jeopardizing the federal or federally‑funded benefits they receive. It applies to anyone who gets disability benefits under title II or XVI of the Social Security Act. By removing the benefit‑eligibility impact of campaign work, the bill aims to eliminate a financial disincentive to running for office.

Key Provisions

  • Any campaign work performed by a qualified individual, and any compensation for that work, will be ignored when determining eligibility for or the amount of benefits under any federal program or any state/local program funded in whole or in part by federal money.
  • "Campaign work" is defined as work done by an individual as a candidate for an elected federal, state, or local office.
  • A "qualified individual" is someone who receives a disability benefit under title II or XVI of the Social Security Act.
