The Veterans' COLA Act of 2024 directs the Department of Veterans Affairs to raise the monthly compensation amounts for veterans with service‑connected disabilities and for surviving family members, starting December 1, 2024. The increase will match the cost‑of‑living adjustment applied to Social Security benefits, so it affects all eligible veterans, their spouses, children, and other dependents.

Key Provisions

  • Effective Dec 1, 2024, the VA must increase the dollar amounts for wartime disability compensation, additional dependent compensation, clothing allowance, and dependency and indemnity compensation for surviving spouses and children.
  • The percentage increase will be the same as the Social Security COLA determined under section 215(i) of the Social Security Act.
  • The Secretary of Veterans Affairs may also administratively adjust rates for certain individuals covered by Public Law 85‑857 who are not otherwise receiving compensation under title 38.
  • The adjusted rates must be published in the Federal Register by the deadline set for the Social Security COLA publication in fiscal year 2025.
