Foreign Propaganda Disclosure Act

Introduced August 27, 2026

AI-Generated Summary

Updated September 1, 2026 at 5:11 AM UTC

The Foreign Propaganda Disclosure Act would change the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) so that people who run monetized social‑media accounts are treated like foreign agents for disclosure purposes. It requires those influencers to file registration statements with the Department of Justice, making their foreign‑related activities public. The bill mainly affects social‑media influencers who earn money from their platforms.

Key Provisions

  • Adds “social media influencer” to the list of persons covered by FARA, meaning they must register if they act on behalf of a foreign principal.
  • Defines a “social media influencer” as anyone with a monetized account on any social‑media platform.
  • Adopts the existing legal definition of “social media platform” from the 2022 Trafficking Victims Prevention and Protection Reauthorization Act.
