Cost Estimates Improvement Act

Introduced September 10, 2026

AI-Generated Summary

Updated September 11, 2026 at 1:23 PM UTC

The Cost Estimates Improvement Act amends the Congressional Budget Act of 1974 so that cost estimates prepared by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) must now include, when possible, the costs of servicing the public debt. This change ensures that budget projections more fully reflect the financial impact of interest and principal payments on the national debt, affecting how lawmakers assess fiscal policies and tax proposals.

Key Provisions

  • Requires CBO and JCT estimates to incorporate public‑debt servicing costs to the extent practicable.
  • Adds a new Section 407 to the Budget Act to codify the inclusion requirement.
  • Updates the Act’s table of contents to list the new Section 407.
