The Veterans' Mental Health Access Act requires the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide inpatient mental‑health treatment—such as care for PTSD, depression, or substance‑abuse disorders—through the Veterans Community Care Program. It sets a rapid‑response deadline and requires regular reporting on how long veterans wait for this care. The bill mainly affects veterans who qualify for VA health benefits and need inpatient mental‑health services.

Key Provisions

  • The VA must furnish covered inpatient mental‑health care to a veteran within 24 hours after the veteran requests it or a health‑care provider prescribes it.
  • The Secretary must publish a report every six months on the VA website showing wait times for veterans receiving inpatient mental‑health care at VA medical centers or through the Community Care Program.
  • The bill defines “covered care” as inpatient treatment for mental‑health conditions, “covered veteran” as a veteran eligible under existing VA law, and “covered facility” as the nearest VA medical center or hospital that provides the care.
