The Clothing Microplastic Transparency Act of 2026 would require any company that sells or offers clothing for sale to label each garment with an estimate of how much microplastic it contains. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) would create rules, in partnership with the EPA, to define how companies calculate that amount and to enforce the labeling requirement. The law aims to give consumers information about microplastic content in clothing and to treat non‑compliance as an unfair or deceptive practice under existing FTC law.

Key Provisions

  • Clothing sellers must place a stamp, tag, label, or similar identifier on each item showing the estimated mass of microplastic in the garment.
  • The FTC must issue regulations within one year of the law’s enactment, working with the EPA to set testing methods for determining microplastic content.
  • Violations are treated as unfair or deceptive acts under the Federal Trade Commission Act, giving the FTC enforcement authority and penalties.
  • The law defines “microplastic” as plastic particles ranging from 5 mm down to 1 nm in size.
