To provide for transparent licensing of commercial remote sensing systems, and for other purposes.

Introduced February 13, 2025

AI-Generated Summary

Updated November 24, 2025 at 2:40 AM UTC

The Commercial Remote Sensing Amendment Act of 2025 updates the rules for licensing commercial satellite‑based remote‑sensing systems. It makes reporting more frequent, clarifies notification rules, adds transparency about license conditions, requires public disclosure of all license applications and approvals by tier, and extends the program’s expiration to 2030. The changes affect companies that operate commercial remote‑sensing satellites and the federal agencies that issue and oversee their licenses.

Key Provisions

  • Shortens the deadline for annual reports on commercial remote‑sensing licenses from 120 days to 60 days after the end of the reporting period.
  • Updates the notification requirements to refer to specific paragraphs of the existing law rather than a broad section.
  • Adds a new condition requiring that any terms, conditions, or restrictions placed on licensees be listed in the licensing record.
  • Requires the government to publish a list of all license applications and granted licenses, organized by the tier system used in the regulations, and to explain why each license was placed in its tier.
  • Extends the overall sunset date for the licensing framework from September 30 2020 to September 30 2030.
