Affordable Housing Through Common-Sense Standards Act

The bill directs the Comptroller General to study and report to Congress on the potential costs and benefits of establishing a single federal residential building code. The study must be completed within one year of the law’s enactment. It seeks to determine if a uniform code could speed local approval processes, lower construction costs, and improve the quality and affordability of housing. The findings would inform federal, state, and local policymakers as well as builders and homebuyers.
