The Supersonic Aviation Modernization Act would let commercial and other civil supersonic airplanes fly over the United States, but only if they can operate without creating a sonic boom that reaches the ground. It directs the FAA to issue or revise the necessary regulations within a year, removing the need for special authorizations for such flights. The bill mainly affects aircraft manufacturers, airlines, and the FAA’s regulatory framework.

Key Provisions

  • Within one year of the law’s enactment, the FAA must create or update rules to let civil supersonic aircraft fly in U.S. airspace without needing a special waiver.
  • The new rules will only allow supersonic flights that are designed or operated so that no sonic boom reaches the ground in the United States.
