AI-Generated Summary

Updated August 4, 2026 at 6:21 AM UTC

The Youth Poisoning Protection Act makes it illegal to sell consumer products that contain a high concentration of sodium nitrite (10% or more by weight) to private individuals. It treats such products as banned hazardous items under the Consumer Product Safety Act. The ban does not affect industrial or commercial uses, nor does it apply to sodium nitrite that is part of a drug, medical device, cosmetic, or food product.

Key Provisions

  • Defines a "high concentration" of sodium nitrite as 10% or more by weight.
  • Classifies any consumer product meeting that definition as a banned hazardous product under the Consumer Product Safety Act.
  • Excludes from the ban any sodium nitrite used in commercial/industrial settings or that is part of a drug, device, cosmetic, or food (including poultry, meat, and egg products).
  • The ban takes effect 90 days after the law is enacted.
