Credit Union Board Modernization Act

Introduced February 11, 2025

AI-Generated Summary

Updated November 24, 2025 at 2:48 AM UTC

The Credit Union Board Modernization Act amends the Federal Credit Union Act to change how often a federal credit union’s board of directors must meet. It sets a minimum meeting schedule for the first five years after a credit union is chartered and then creates different meeting frequencies based on the credit union’s financial rating. The changes affect all federally chartered credit unions and aim to give more flexibility while ensuring oversight for higher‑rated institutions.

Key Provisions

  • Eliminates the blanket requirement that boards meet monthly and replaces it with a tiered schedule.
  • During the first five years after charter approval, boards must meet at least once a month.
  • After five years, credit unions with a composite rating of 1 or 2 must meet at least six times a year, with at least one meeting in each fiscal quarter.
  • Credit unions with a composite rating of 3, 4, or 5 must continue to meet at least monthly.
