The Seneca Nation Law Enforcement Efficiency Act would stop the State of New York’s jurisdiction, granted by the 1948 Act, from applying on lands that belong to the Seneca Nation in New York. The change would only take effect if the U.S. Attorney General and the Seneca Nation both agree in writing, after the Attorney General has consulted with the tribe and the state. It mainly affects law‑enforcement authority on Seneca Nation territory.

Key Provisions

  • Defines “territory” as any land of the Seneca Nation that is considered Indian country under federal law.
  • Requires written concurrence from both the Attorney General and the Seneca Nation before the 1948 Act’s jurisdiction over that territory is nullified.
  • Mandates that the Attorney General consult with the Seneca Nation and the State of New York before giving such concurrence.
