The Supporting Focus in Schools Act creates a competitive grant program for elementary and secondary schools that receive Title I funds and have a policy banning student use of personal electronic devices during instructional time. The grants help schools enforce these bans by buying storage equipment and training staff. Schools must report on how the funded activities affect academic outcomes.

Key Provisions

  • Grants are available only to Title I elementary or secondary schools that adopt a policy prohibiting personal electronic device use during instruction, with limited exceptions for health, disability, or emergencies.
  • The Department of Education will run the grant program, and schools must apply with their device‑policy details.
  • Grant money can be used to buy lockers, pouches, or similar storage for devices and to provide professional development for teachers and staff on enforcing the policy.
  • Recipient schools must submit a report within one year of receiving a grant describing the impact of the funded activities on academic outcomes.
