Homeland Security for Children Act

Introduced March 6, 2017

AI-Generated Summary

Updated April 15, 2026 at 1:35 PM UTC

The Homeland Security for Children Act amends the Homeland Security Act of 2002 to make sure the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) considers the specific needs of children when planning for disasters, terrorism, and other emergencies. It requires DHS to gather feedback from organizations that represent children, appoint a technical expert to integrate those needs, and report on these efforts each year for five years. The changes affect DHS policy‑making and any agencies or programs that deal with public safety and emergency response.

Key Provisions

  • Adds language to the stakeholder‑feedback requirement, specifying that feedback must include input from organizations representing children’s needs.
  • Creates a new subparagraph that tasks a technical expert with identifying and integrating children’s needs into all disaster‑preparation and response activities, and allows the expert to consult outside organizations.
  • Mandates the Under Secretary for Strategy, Policy, and Plans to submit an annual report for five years describing how DHS incorporates children’s needs, who is responsible, any policy reviews or changes, and coordination with external experts.
