Common questions

Do I need an account?

No. The website and the app work without signing in. In the app, what you follow, your district and your settings are kept on your device. Your follows are also sent to legislate.dev, anonymously, to build your Following feed.

Where does the information come from?

It comes from the official record: Congress.gov, the House and Senate clerks, and GovInfo. It's refreshed through the day, so something that just happened in Congress can take a little while to appear. About Legislate lists every source.

Something looks wrong. What should I do?

Every bill, vote and member page links to the official source, so you can check it there. Then email us with a link to the page. In the app, Settings → Send Feedback starts an email for you.

Who writes the bill summaries?

Summaries marked AI are generated from the bill text and can contain mistakes. Where the Congressional Research Service has written an official summary, you can read that too. For anything that matters, read the bill text, which every bill page links to.

Is Legislate a government app?

No. Legislate is independent and isn’t affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Congress or any government agency. It doesn’t take positions or tell anyone how to vote.

How do I delete my data?

In the app, open Settings → Delete Data on This Device. That removes your follows and settings from your device and from legislate.dev. Deleting the app removes what’s on your device; the copy on legislate.dev is removed after a long period without activity, or straight away if you email us. The privacy policy has the details.

Which devices does the app run on?

iPhone and iPad. There’s no Android app yet. Everything in the app is also on this website.
