Microloan Modernization Act of 2017

Introduced April 6, 2017

AI-Generated Summary

Updated April 15, 2026 at 2:55 PM UTC

The Microloan Modernization Act of 2017 updates the Small Business Act to make the SBA’s microloan program more accessible and better supported. It raises the maximum amount an intermediary can lend, doubles the share of technical assistance they must provide, and orders studies to understand and improve participation and oversight. The changes affect the SBA, its intermediary lenders, and the small businesses that receive microloans.

Key Provisions

  • Increases the lending cap for microloan intermediaries from $5 million to $6 million.
  • Raises the required technical‑assistance contribution from intermediaries from 25% to 50% of loan amounts.
  • Directs the SBA to conduct a study within a year on why eligible intermediaries do or do not participate and to recommend ways to boost participation and lower costs.
  • Requires the GAO, within a year, to evaluate SBA oversight of the microloan program and the compliance and performance processes for participating intermediaries.
