Introduced May 11, 2017

AI-Generated Summary

Updated April 15, 2026 at 3:28 PM UTC

The bill updates the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act to let active-duty servicemembers, reserve members, and spouses of servicemembers who die in service end their cable, satellite TV, and Internet service contracts while they are deployed. It adds these types of communications services to the existing protections for telephone contracts and sets rules for returning any equipment the provider loaned to the servicemember.

Key Provisions

  • Expands SCRA Section 305A to cover multichannel video programming (cable/satellite TV) and Internet access contracts, allowing them to be terminated without penalty while deployed.
  • Extends coverage to spouses of servicemembers who die in service and to reserve component members performing active duty, Guard/Reserve duty, or training.
  • Requires the servicemember to return any provider‑owned equipment (e.g., routers, modems, set‑top boxes) within 10 days after the service is disconnected.
  • Adds clear definitions for “commercial mobile service,” “multichannel video programming service,” and “provider‑owned consumer premises equipment.”
  • Updates the SCRA title heading from “Telephone” to “Communications” and revises the table of contents to reflect the new coverage.
