Countering Terrorist Financing Act of 2017

Introduced May 24, 2017

AI-Generated Summary

Updated April 15, 2026 at 3:48 PM UTC

The Countering Terrorist Financing Act of 2017 changes the law so the Treasury Secretary can target any type of money—not just coins or paper currency—when issuing geographic targeting orders (GTOs). By expanding the definition of “funds,” the bill gives the Treasury broader authority to block financial transactions that may support terrorism. The change mainly affects the Treasury Department and financial institutions that must follow GTOs.

Key Provisions

  • Amends Section 5326 of Title 31 to replace references to “coin and currency” with the broader term “funds.”
  • Updates the heading and language in subsections (a) and (b) so the Secretary can describe and target any funds in a GTO.
  • Makes a clerical update to the table of contents to remove the phrase “coin and currency.”
