La Paz County Land Conveyance Act

Introduced May 24, 2017

AI-Generated Summary

Updated April 15, 2026 at 4:01 PM UTC

The La Paz County Land Conveyance Act lets the Secretary of the Interior transfer about 8,800 acres of Bureau of Land Management land in La Paz County, Arizona, to the county. The county must request the transfer, pay the fair‑market value determined by an appraisal, and follow conditions that protect tribal cultural sites and other significant resources. The law also sets how costs are covered and where any sale proceeds go.

Key Provisions

  • The county can ask the Secretary to convey the identified federal land within 90 days of the request, subject to existing rights and any conditions the Secretary deems necessary.
  • The land must be sold to the county for its fair market value, determined by an appraisal that follows federal appraisal standards.
  • Any parcels that contain important cultural, environmental, wildlife, or recreational resources are excluded from the conveyance.
  • The county (and any future owners) must make good‑faith efforts to avoid disturbing tribal artifacts, coordinate with the Colorado River Indian Tribes’ historic preservation office, and allow reburial of any artifacts found.
  • The map showing the land to be conveyed must be publicly available, and minor boundary or description corrections can be made by mutual agreement of the Secretary and the county.
  • The conveyed land is withdrawn from mining and mineral leasing laws.
  • The county must pay the appraised value plus all costs for surveys, appraisals, and other administrative expenses related to the transfer.
  • Any money received from selling the land is deposited into the Federal Land Disposal Account and used according to that account’s rules.
