Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac Transparency Act of 2017

Introduced January 5, 2017

AI-Generated Summary

Updated April 15, 2026 at 11:13 AM UTC

The Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac Transparency Act of 2017 changes the law so that, while these government‑sponsored enterprises are under conservatorship or receivership, they must follow the Freedom of Information Act like other federal agencies. This gives the public the right to request and receive records from the two mortgage‑finance companies during that period.

Key Provisions

  • When Fannie Mae (Federal National Mortgage Association) or Freddie Mac (Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation) are in conservatorship or receivership, they will be treated as federal agencies for Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) purposes.
  • This designation applies even though the agencies are normally exempt from FOIA under existing law.
