Background Check Completion Act of 2017

Introduced July 27, 2017

AI-Generated Summary

Updated April 15, 2026 at 5:39 PM UTC

The Background Check Completion Act of 2017 would make it illegal for firearms dealers to sell a gun until the required background check is finished. It changes existing federal law to close a loophole that currently lets dealers complete a sale before the check is done. The rule would apply to all licensed gun dealers and anyone buying a firearm from them.

Key Provisions

  • Amends 18 U.S.C. § 922(t)(1)(B) to remove language that permits a sale before a background check is completed, effectively requiring the check to be finished before the dealer can transfer a firearm.
