Updated April 15, 2026 at 11:05 AM UTC

The bill lets the leaders of each Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) at the Department of Veterans Affairs hire outside civilian groups that specialize in accreditation or health‑care evaluation to examine VA medical centers. It requires those VISN directors to inform the VA Secretary, the VA Inspector General, and the U.S. Comptroller General before any contract is signed, and it makes clear that the bill does not limit the Inspector General’s own review powers.

Key Provisions

  • VISN directors may contract with civilian accreditation or health‑care evaluation entities to investigate any VA medical center and report any deficiencies.
  • Before contracting, directors must notify the VA Secretary, the VA Inspector General, and the Comptroller General to coordinate with any ongoing investigations or accreditations.
  • The bill explicitly states that it does not restrict the Inspector General’s ability to conduct reviews, audits, or inspections, nor does it change the requirement that VA employees assist the Inspector General.
