Correcting Miscalculations in Veterans' Pensions Act

Introduced November 16, 2017

AI-Generated Summary

Updated April 15, 2026 at 7:25 PM UTC

The Correcting Miscalculations in Veterans' Pensions Act updates federal law so that agencies can cover interest owed to veterans, former uniformed service members, and certain volunteers when an administrative mistake leads to a lower annuity deposit. It applies to both the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) and the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS), and it treats congressional employees as if they were employed by their respective chamber for these purposes. The Office of Personnel Management must issue rules to carry out the changes, and the interest payments will come from the existing retirement fund.

Key Provisions

  • Adds language to the CSRS and FERS sections of Title 5 so that if an agency makes an administrative error when calculating a veteran’s or former member’s annuity deposit, the agency can pay any extra interest that the error caused.
  • Specifies that for members of Congress and congressional employees, the Secretary of the Senate or the Chief Administrative Officer of the House is treated as the employing agency for purposes of these interest payments.
  • Requires the Director of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to issue regulations to implement the new interest‑payment authority.
  • Authorizes all such interest payments (and related administrative costs) to be drawn from the Civil Service Retirement and Disability Fund.
