Introduced January 16, 2018

AI-Generated Summary

Updated April 15, 2026 at 7:50 PM UTC

The Pay Our Troops Act of 2018 would provide a stop‑gap source of money to keep military and related personnel paid if the federal government shuts down during fiscal year 2018. It directs Treasury funds that are not otherwise earmarked to cover pay for active‑duty service members, reservists in training, civilian Defense (and Coast Guard) staff, and Defense contractors. The bill applies to anyone receiving pay or allowances from the Department of Defense or the Department of Homeland Security’s Coast Guard during a shutdown period.

Key Provisions

  • Appropriates any available Treasury money for FY 2018 to pay active‑duty service members, reservists performing inactive‑duty training, civilian Defense (and Coast Guard) personnel supporting the forces, and Defense (and Coast Guard) contractors supporting the forces during a shutdown.
  • Defines the “Secretary concerned” as the Secretary of Defense for Defense matters and the Secretary of Homeland Security for Coast Guard matters.
  • Specifies that the funding lasts until a regular or continuing appropriations bill is enacted, or until January 1 2019, whichever comes first.
