FRA Safety Data Improvement Act

Introduced February 5, 2018

AI-Generated Summary

Updated April 15, 2026 at 8:10 PM UTC

The FRA Safety Data Improvement Act directs the Federal Railroad Administration to adopt the recommendations from a 2017 Department of Transportation Inspector General report aimed at better managing and collecting railroad safety data. It requires the agency to develop a detailed implementation plan and timeline, submit that plan to key congressional committees within six months, and report annually on progress, all without allocating additional money.

Key Provisions

  • The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) must create a plan, with a timeline, to put into practice the recommendations from the DOT Inspector General’s 2017 report on improving how railroad safety data are managed and collected.
  • The FRA must submit this plan and timeline to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee within 180 days of the law’s enactment.
  • The FRA must give the two committees an annual update on progress until the plan is fully carried out.
  • The law does not provide any new funding; the FRA must use existing authorized funds to meet these requirements.
