Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park Boundary Revision Act

Introduced January 13, 2017

AI-Generated Summary

Updated April 15, 2026 at 11:57 AM UTC

The bill changes the Ocmulgee National Monument in Georgia into the Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park and adds about 2,100 acres to its boundaries. It directs the Interior Secretary to acquire any new land only through donation, purchase from willing sellers, or land exchanges—condemnation is prohibited. The law also requires a study of the Ocmulgee River corridor between Macon and Hawkinsville to see if more land should be added to the National Park System.

Key Provisions

  • Renames Ocmulgee National Monument as Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park.
  • Expands the park’s boundary to include roughly 2,100 additional acres, as shown on a specified map.
  • Limits land acquisition for the new area to donation, purchase from willing sellers, or exchange; the Secretary cannot take land by condemnation.
  • Orders a special resource study of the Ocmulgee River corridor (Macon to Hawkinsville) to evaluate its national significance and feasibility of adding it to the park system.
  • Requires the Secretary to submit a report with study results and recommendations to the House and Senate natural resources committees within three years of receiving funding.
