Social Security Number Fraud Prevention Act of 2017

Introduced January 24, 2017

AI-Generated Summary

Updated April 15, 2026 at 11:58 AM UTC

The Social Security Number Fraud Prevention Act of 2017 limits the use of full Social Security numbers on federal documents that are mailed. It requires agency heads to approve any inclusion of a full number and directs agencies to create rules for when it is truly necessary, how to partially mask numbers, and to keep numbers hidden on the outside of mail packages. The law also mandates annual reporting for five years on how agencies are complying.

Key Provisions

  • Federal agencies may only put a full Social Security number on mailed documents if the agency head decides it is necessary.
  • Within five years, each CFO Act agency must issue regulations that define when a full number is needed, require partial redaction where possible, and prohibit SSNs from being visible on the outside of mailed packages.
  • Agency heads must submit annual reports for five years to relevant House and Senate committees, detailing documents that contain full SSNs, compliance plans, and rationales for any necessary inclusions.
  • The restriction on mailing full SSNs takes effect five years after the law is enacted.
