Updated April 15, 2026 at 11:28 PM UTC

The Republic of Texas Legation Memorial Act lets the nonprofit group Daughters of the Republic of Texas create a commemorative plaque in Washington, D.C. The plaque would honor the diplomats from the Republic of Texas who served in the nation’s capital and helped bring Texas into the United States as the 28th state. The bill requires the memorial to follow existing federal rules for commemorative works and bans the use of any federal money for its construction or upkeep.

Key Provisions

  • Authorizes the Daughters of the Republic of Texas to place a plaque memorial on federal land in the District of Columbia.
  • The memorial must comply with the Commemorative Works Act, which sets standards for location, design, and maintenance of such works.
  • No federal funds may be used; the sponsoring organization must raise and cover all costs itself.
  • Any leftover money after the memorial is built and maintained must be turned over to the Secretary of the Interior or, later, to a National Park Foundation account for future memorial-related use.
