GI Bill Transfer Extension Act

Introduced September 10, 2018

AI-Generated Summary

Updated April 15, 2026 at 11:32 PM UTC

The GI Bill Transfer Extension Act changes the rules for the Post‑9/11 Educational Assistance Program so service members and veterans can transfer their education benefits for a longer period. It updates who can transfer, removes a time‑limit on making the transfer, and stops regulations from limiting eligibility based on total years of service. The changes apply to anyone discharged from the uniformed services on or after Jan. 1, 2009.

Key Provisions

  • Eligibility is limited to service members who have completed at least six years of service and agree to serve four more years, or as defined by future regulations.
  • Veterans who met the same service requirements can transfer benefits if they were discharged within the past 15 years.
  • The previous deadline for making a transfer request is eliminated, allowing transfers at any time.
  • Regulations may not set a maximum number of service years as a condition for eligibility.
  • The new rules apply to all service members discharged on or after Jan. 1, 2009.
