National Flood Insurance Program Competition and Extension Act of 2018

Introduced December 21, 2018

AI-Generated Summary

Updated April 16, 2026 at 12:44 AM UTC

The National Flood Insurance Program Competition and Extension Act of 2018 extends the authorization of the federal flood insurance program through May 31 2019, instead of ending on December 7 2018. It also removes a rule that prevented private insurers, agents, brokers, or other insurance entities from selling their own flood insurance policies while participating in the NFIP’s Write‑Your‑Own program. The changes apply to the NFIP administrator and any agreements with private insurers.

Key Provisions

  • Extends the NFIP’s financing and program expiration dates to May 31 2019, with a retroactive effective date of December 21 2018.
  • Prohibits the NFIP administrator from requiring insurers, agents, brokers, or related organizations to agree not to sell private flood insurance as a condition for participating in the Write‑Your‑Own program or other NFIP activities.
  • Invalidates any existing agreements that contain such non‑compete provisions, making those provisions unenforceable.
