J. Bennett Johnston Waterway Hydropower Extension Act of 2018

Introduced May 16, 2017

AI-Generated Summary

Updated April 15, 2026 at 3:28 PM UTC

The J. Bennett Johnston Waterway Hydropower Extension Act of 2018 changes the rules for three specific hydroelectric projects (FERC license numbers 12756, 12757, and 12758). It lets the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission give the project owners up to three additional two‑year periods to start building after the original deadline has passed. If a project's deadline expired before this law took effect, the commission can restore the license and begin the first extension right away. The bill mainly affects the license holders of those projects and the Commission that oversees them.

Key Provisions

  • Allows the Commission, upon a licensee’s request and after notice, to extend the construction start deadline for the three projects for up to three consecutive two‑year periods.
  • If a project's deadline expired before the law’s enactment, the Commission may reinstate the license and treat the reinstatement date as the start of the first extension.
