Helium Extraction Act of 2017

Introduced July 18, 2017

AI-Generated Summary

Updated April 15, 2026 at 5:26 PM UTC

The Helium Extraction Act of 2017 changes federal law so that helium taken from gas on federally leased mineral lands is treated like oil and gas for lease purposes. This keeps the lease active under the same rules that apply to oil and gas production. The change affects the Department of the Interior, leaseholders, and companies that extract helium from federal lands.

Key Provisions

  • Amends the Mineral Leasing Act to state that when helium is extracted from gas produced on a federal mineral lease, the lease will be treated the same way as if the extracted helium were oil or gas, meaning the lease remains in effect under the same conditions.
