Honoring Veterans’ Families Act

Introduced February 8, 2019

AI-Generated Summary

Updated April 14, 2026 at 1:53 AM UTC

The Honoring Veterans’ Families Act changes federal law to let the Department of Veterans Affairs add the names of a veteran’s surviving spouse or eligible dependent child to the headstones and markers that VA provides. It applies to headstones placed in non‑VA cemeteries as well as those the VA supplies directly, and it takes effect for veterans who die on or after October 1, 2018.

Key Provisions

  • VA may, if feasible and upon request, replace a veteran’s headstone or marker to add an inscription for a surviving spouse or eligible dependent child after that spouse or child dies.
  • If the spouse or eligible dependent child died before the veteran, VA may still add their name to the veteran’s headstone or marker, if feasible and requested.
  • The law defines “non‑VA cemetery” as a state‑owned veterans cemetery or any state, local, tribal, or private cemetery.
  • These new inscription authorities apply to veterans who die on or after October 1, 2018.
