The Census Accuracy Act of 2019 would change the U.S. Census questionnaire so that, beginning with the 2020 census and every census after that, respondents can indicate their citizenship or lawful immigration status. It also requires a follow‑up question asking which federal program or law gave them that status. The change applies to anyone who fills out a census questionnaire.

Key Provisions

  • Amends Title 13 to add a new subsection that obligates the Secretary of Commerce to include a checkbox on census forms for respondents to select: U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, other lawful immigration status, or none of these.
  • Requires an additional question tied to the immigration‑status option asking which federal program or law granted that status.
