The Protecting Defense Dollars Act requires the Secretary of Defense, in consultation with the Secretary of the Air Force, to provide regular reports on how much the Department of Defense spends to support presidential travel. The reports are sent to the House Armed Services Committee every 90 days, starting 90 days after the law takes effect. This gives Congress visibility into both direct and indirect defense costs tied to trips, including those to properties owned or used by the President or their immediate family.

Key Provisions

  • The Secretary of Defense must submit a cost report within 90 days of the law’s enactment and then every 90 days thereafter.
  • Reports must detail all direct and indirect Department of Defense expenses related to presidential travel.
  • The cost accounting includes travel to any property owned or operated by the President or an immediate family member.
  • The term “immediate family member” is defined as the President’s spouse, adult or minor children, or the spouse of an adult child.
