This bill updates the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 to clearly restate that the Secretary of the Interior can place land into trust for Indian tribes. It changes the language to define "Indian tribe" more broadly and to refer specifically to federally recognized tribes, ensuring the trust‑land authority remains in effect.

Key Provisions

  • Amends Section 19 of the Indian Reorganization Act by replacing the phrase “any recognized Indian tribe now under Federal jurisdiction” with “any federally recognized Indian Tribe.”
  • Redefines “Indian tribe” to include any Indian or Alaska Native tribe, band, nation, pueblo, village, or community that the Secretary of the Interior acknowledges as an Indian tribe.
  • Specifies that these amendments take effect as if they were part of the original 1934 Act.
