The Citizens Count Census Act of 2019 would change the U.S. Census law to require that every decennial census questionnaire include a clear option for respondents to indicate whether they are a U.S. citizen or national. This applies to the 2020 census and all future censuses, affecting anyone who fills out the census form.

Key Provisions

  • Amends Title 13 of the U.S. Code to add a new subsection that mandates a checkbox (or similar option) on census questionnaires for respondents to state their citizenship or national status.
  • Reassigns the existing subsection (g) to subsection (h) to make room for the new citizenship question provision.
