Renter Protection Act of 2021

Introduced June 15, 2021

AI-Generated Summary

Updated February 8, 2026 at 4:20 AM UTC

The Renter Protection Act of 2021 aims to speed up the distribution of emergency rental assistance funds and ensure they are used specifically for rent arrears. It directs that any funds allocated under the American Rescue Plan but not yet paid as of July 1, 2021 must be promptly paid to eligible grantees. The law also limits the use of those funds—and any unused funds already paid—to covering rent arrears for eligible households, and it shortens the deadline for using the funds to December 31, 2021.

Key Provisions

  • Requires any ARPA rental assistance funds allocated but not paid by July 1, 2021 to be paid to eligible grantees immediately.
  • Mandates that those funds, and any unused funds already paid, can only be used to help eligible households pay rent arrears.
  • Adds a new requirement in the Consolidated Appropriations Act that such assistance be used solely for rent arrears.
  • Changes the fund availability deadline from September 30, 2022 to December 31, 2021.
