AI-Generated Summary

Updated February 8, 2026 at 4:32 PM UTC

The bill temporarily lifts the required minimum distribution (RMD) rules for certain retirement plans and accounts for the calendar years 2020 and 2022. It changes the tax code so retirees and plan administrators do not have to take the usual minimum withdrawals in those years. The changes apply to eligible retirement plans, IRAs, and rollover distributions, and include guidance for plan amendments to stay compliant.

Key Provisions

  • Amends the Internal Revenue Code to define a “required minimum distribution suspension calendar year” as 2020 and 2022, removing the fixed 2020 reference and allowing the suspension for both years.
  • Extends eligibility for rollover distributions to include the year 2022, matching the RMD suspension.
  • Specifies that the suspension rules apply to calendar years beginning after December 31, 2021, effectively covering the 2022 RMD year and retroactively recognizing 2020 as a suspension year.
  • Provides rules for plan or contract amendments so that plans adopting the suspension remain in compliance, with amendment deadlines of the first plan year beginning on or after January 1 2024 (or 2026 for governmental plans).
