The John Lewis NIMHD Research Endowment Revitalization Act of 2021 amends the Public Health Service Act to broaden the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) director’s authority to award research endowments. It allows endowments to be made not only to currently operating centers of excellence but also to those that have previously held that status. This change aims to support ongoing minority health and health disparities research at a wider range of institutions.

Key Provisions

  • Amends section 464z‑3(h) of the Public Health Service Act to let the NIMHD director provide research endowments at both current and former centers of excellence under section 736;
  • Extends the same authority to former centers of excellence under section 464z‑4, enabling continued funding for minority health and health disparities research.
