Expediting Temporary Ratings for Veterans Act

Introduced January 9, 2023

AI-Generated Summary

Updated January 20, 2026 at 1:57 AM UTC

The Expediting Temporary Ratings for Veterans Act requires the Department of Veterans Affairs to upgrade its computer systems so that certain temporary disability rating claims can be processed automatically. The changes must be in place within one year of the law’s enactment and apply to veterans eligible under the specific statutory provision. While the system will handle routine cases, VA staff must still review eligibility and can process claims manually when needed.

Key Provisions

  • The VA Secretary must modify the department’s IT systems within one year to enable automatic processing of temporary disability rating claims for veterans covered by 38 U.S.C. §1156(a)(1)(C).
  • The system must pull medical evidence from the VA’s corporate data warehouse.
  • VA employees must continue to determine each veteran’s eligibility for a temporary rating.
  • If the available evidence is insufficient or in an incompatible format, the claim must be processed manually.
