Enhancing COPS Hiring Program Grants for Local Law Enforcement Act

Introduced May 16, 2023

AI-Generated Summary

Updated January 20, 2026 at 7:41 AM UTC

The bill changes the 1968 Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act so that COPS grant money can be used to give bonuses that help recruit and keep local law‑enforcement officers. It also makes the grant application process easier by letting agencies amend an existing application instead of starting a new one, for up to five years after the original filing. The changes affect local police departments that receive COPS grants and the Attorney General who oversees the program.

Key Provisions

  • Allows COPS grant funds to be used for recruitment and retention bonuses for law‑enforcement officers.
  • Permits the Attorney General to let grant applicants amend a previously submitted application rather than submit a new one, for funding consideration up to five years after the original submission.
  • Adds definitions for “law enforcement officer” and clarifies the meaning of “submitted application.”
